ICT in subject teaching
Primary ICT has to two parts to it:
- Discrete ICT subject teaching where pupils are taught the knowledge and skills associated with information and communication technology
- ICT in subject teaching which has a number of aims namely:
- to provide pupils with opportunities to apply and develop their ICT capability in all subjects
- to a provide meaningful context for the assessment of pupil’s ICT capability
- to raise pupil attainment in all subjects
The National Curriculum in Action quotes “it is a general requirement, teachers should provide pupils with opportunities to apply and develop their ICT capability in all subjects (except physical education and the non-core foundation subjects at key stage 1). For each subject, these translate into specific, statutory requirements to use ICT in subject teaching. Teachers should use their judgement to decide when the use of ICT is appropriate at key stage 1 in the non-core foundation subjects.”
Their website now includes examples of pupils’ work with ICT across a range of subjects, with teacher commentary on how the use of ICT enhanced learning in the subject. The work exemplifies the requirements to use ICT in subject teaching.

Below is a document that looks at the ICT themes and key skills from Foundation Stage to Upper Key Stage two and provides some examples on how ICT can be applied across a range of subjects. Examples of cross-curricular lesson plans for the activities suggested in the scheme of work can be found under the cross-curricular lesson plans tab above under the relevant year group.
