NELC Primary Framework for ICT

Posted by nelcprimaryict on 3rd March 2008

The NELC Primary Framework for ICT has been designed to support teachers and schools to deliver high quality learning and teaching for all children. It contains detailed guidance and materials to support the teaching of ICT in primary schools.

What’s new on the Framework?

A link to YHGfL’s Autumn newsletter has been added to the newsletter links area

Links to Google Books (free e-books) and Wordia (video word definitions) added to the useful website section on the RHS.

Download the new QCA document Planning, teaching and assessing the curriculum for pupils with learning difficulties – Information and communication technology from the school ICT development documents section

See this year’s ICT Course Planner (2009 – 10) available from the CPD section on the RHS of the page. Please note courses must be booked through the Lighthouse for Learning website (click on the link below).   http://tlfl.org.uk/component/option,com_registrationpro/Itemid,41/

A link to SWGfL’s school e-safety self review framework and a link to the NEN online e-safety audit tool  has been added to the e-safety links area. These are useful  resources for assessing your school’s e-safety awareness and point to further information if reqired.

Links to websites providing advice and support about Cyberbullying now added to the links section at the RHS of the page.

New in the assessment section: The APP framework for primary ICT: overview, learning objectives, and ICT assessment guidelines

New resources to support e-safety assemblies in KS2- now available from the ICT Training School’s Resource Area.

A draft paper about Information and communication technology in the proposed primary curriculum has now been added to the Progression in Learning in ICT area. This states the following:

The proposed curriculum has taken a fresh approach to Information and communication technology (ICT). As children live and learn in a technologically rich world the ability to use ICT tools to support learning is more important than ever. This is why ICT capability has been identified as an essential for learning and life.

Sheffield Learning and Achievement Service have produced an APP Grid for Primary ICT – this can now be downloaded from the assessment area on the NELC Framework

Harnessing Technology funding 2009–10 Guidance for schools now uploaded to the school ICT development page.

There are a huge number of e-safety resources available but it can take some time to find them. Becta have put together some spreadsheets which categorise them and provide a link so you can find what you want quickly! These are available from the e-safety section of the NELC Framework – you may have to scroll down a bit!

A new draft SOW of work for online research, communication, publishing and e-safety has been added to the key skills section of the Framework (EYFS – Y6). Please note that this is a draft version produced by London Grid for Learning (LGfL) in collaboration with other partners. From my perspective it is a useful document which unpicks the NC communicating and exchanging information core theme in terms of new technologies and gives teachers access to resources and activities through which to deliver this. If you have questions or feedback about this document could you email them to yvonne.walker@nelincs.gov.uk and I will collate them and pass them onto LGfL.

New guidance document from Becta about AUPS and establishing safe online behaviour – see ICT development page

Check out the links on the RHS to the Think U Know website produced by CEOP (Child Exploitation Online Protection Centre)and to YHGfL’s new e-safety pages.

Check out the Progression in Learning page where a new document called NC ICT Core Themes Progression Linked to Applications has been uploaded. This document looks at the progression through the national curriculum core themes for ICT and links the activities for delivering this with the original QCA SOW for ICT (lower level) and the NELC SOW for ICT (higher level). To access the lesson plans from both schemes of work just click on the links in the tables. This provides an opportunity to ensure that pupils can be taught at an appropriate level according to their existing skills and knowledge. The suggestions for applications within the document consist of links to information about relevant 2Simple applications or Open Source applications (OS). The reasons for focusing on these applications are as follows:

2Simple software

A comprehensive suite of software now available to all primary schools in North East Lincolnshire at no cost!

The programs have videos which explain how to use them making them easy to use in the classroom

Teacher options within the software allow s the programs to be set at different levels of difficulty which means that the applications can be used in different year groups at an appropriate level.

Open Source Applications (OS)

These are applications freely available on the internet and which can be used to support teaching and learning. There are a number of benefits to using OS applications namely:

They are free so schools can use them to resource their ICT curriculum and use their ICT budget for other things such as hardware.

Pupils who enjoy using the OS applications can download the programs and use them at home

There are also some issues with regards to OS applications that teachers should be aware of:

Teachers may find that they can access OS applications at home but they are blocked in school by the web filters. If you find this to be the case in your school could you please email me (Yvonne.walker@nelincs.gov.uk) with the details of the OS application and your school and I will get the issue resolved for all schools in NE Lincs.

Check out the new School ICT Development page. This has links to useful exemplar policies and job descriptions.

Also, a new assessment record spreadsheet has been added to the assessment page. This record sheet focuses on the NC core themes for ICT and provides a mechanism for teachers to record their pupil’s ICT assessment results and assign a NC level. Comments welcome!
